using skip counting in everyday life
In order to successfully teach the topic of math we need to connect the children's learning to every day life, they need to see what they are doing, the patterns, and why they need to know it. "Mathematics learning becomes more meaningful when children know what they are doing and why" (Jung, & Conderman, 2013, p.175) Skip counting is used in the things we do in our everyday lives without us even being aware of it most of the time. Below are a few examples of ways in which we use skip counting in our day to day lives.

telling time
scoring in sport
The scoring of sporting games can also include skip counting in games such as basketball or AFL where goals are worth more than one point. For example in basketball every time someone gets a goal the score goes up by two points, children can see that if the team scored ten goals they can skip count by twos ten times in order to figure out the score.
